Picking Baby Names Suri Cruise, Apple Martin, Romeo Beckham - there's no doubt that celebrities like to pick unusual names for their offspring, and that's saying nothing of "Zowie Bowie".
When more ordinary mortals go about choosing baby names, though, the temptation is still there to choose something a little bit different. Gone are the days when children were named after their parents or grandparents, and if you shouted the name "Mary" or "James" out of a window, half a dozen children will come running. No, these days parents are getting more creative with their names, but that doesn't mean that choosing a name is easy - far from it. Here are some tips to make sure you get it right.
Try to avoid choosing the celebrity name of the moment Have you ever stopped to wonder how many little girls born in 1988 are called Kylie? Or how many babies called Victoria or Gerri The Spice Girls spawned? As tempting as it is to name your child after your current favourite celeb, remember that celebrities come and go, but your baby will have to put up with the name you've picked forever. When your child is an adult, she might not appreciate having a name that pin-points her age to within a few years - and how will she feel if that clean-cut pop star you named her after turns to drink and drugs a few years down the line?
Consider, too, whether a name has become synonymous with anyone you'd rather not have your child associated with. "Bianca", for instance, used to call to mind the glamorous Bianca Jagger, but is now more likely to have your child followed by screams of "Rickaaay!" everywhere she goes.
Think carefully about how the name works with your surname You may have had your heart set on naming your firstborn son "Philip" since you were a little girl, but if you've married a man with the surname "Philips", that may not be such a good idea - just ask Zowie Bowie. Be aware, too, of what the surname and first name will sound like together. If your surname is Dover, for instance, you won't want to call your son "Ben".
Choose a name that will suit all ages Cute little babies seem to require cutesy little names, but try to remember that your chubby little child could one day become a brain surgeon or lawyer - or even the Prime Minister - and choose your name accordingly. Names like "Chardonnay" or "Dwayne" just don't hold the same gravitas as a more neutral name, and while they won't stop your child achieving, they may be a source of embarrassment in the future.
Have fun with it Choosing your new baby's name is a serious matter, but it should be an enjoyable experience, too. Buy a "Babies Names" book, curl up on the sofa - and think of all those lovely personalised gifts you'll be able to buy once you've decided on a name!
